It has been nearly 50 years the Equal Pay Act of 1963 was signed, yet according to the 2010 US Census, women in Indiana are paid 73 cents for every dollar men are paid. This year, April 9 is known as Equal Pay Day and marks the amount of time into a new year that a woman typically has to work to achieve the income the average man earned the previous year. Each year on this day, the YWCA Northeast Indiana sponsors an event to stress the ways to close the pay gap.
In recognition of Equal Pay Day 2013, on Tuesday, April 9, at 10:00 a.m. at its 1610 Spy Run Avenue office in Fort Wayne, YWCA Northeast Indiana will be hosting an Equal Pay Day Rally. Ivy Tech Community College–Northeast is pleased to be a partnering organization in Women’s Pay Equity Week for 2013. In addition to helping with the planning and execution of the week’s events, members of the college’s Career Services staff will be assisting with résumés and job-search strategies following the rally.
The following day, a continental breakfast and panel discussion on Pay Equity will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 7:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne. This event is sponsored by YWCA Northeast Indiana, AAUW, Ivy Tech Community College–Northeast, League of Women Voters and Women’s Bureau. The panel will be comprised of community leaders discussing the wage gap for women.
